Ukrzaliznytsia introduces ticket sales at new rates

Joint-stock company Ukrzaliznytsia announced the introduction of a dynamic pricing system for passengers who choose premium segments of transportation. The new rules will come into effect on April 25, 2026 and will apply exclusively to cars of the SV (luxury) category and the first class of Intercity trains within domestic connections.

The main goal of the changes is to flexibly regulate the cost of the trip according to the new coefficients depending on market demand, which will allow for a more efficient distribution of passenger traffic during peak periods. The pricing algorithm will be based on four key factors: seasonality, days of the week, advance purchase, and the current level of occupancy of the car. In particular, the carrier is introducing 16 seasonality zones that take into account the holiday and vacation calendar.

The most favorable fares will be valid on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while on Fridays and Sundays the cost of tickets will be maximum. In addition, passengers who plan their trip in advance will be able to purchase travel documents much cheaper than those who contact the ticket office on the day of departure.

“Dynamic pricing is a global practice that operates not only among the world’s railways, but also among taxi operators and air transportation. The new rules will apply to less than 10% of passengers, the conditions for others will not change,” the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia noted.

At the same time, the state-owned enterprise emphasizes maintaining the social orientation of transportation. Fares for travel in reserved and compartment cars, as well as in the second class of Intercity trains, remain unchanged. Such a decision is fundamental to ensuring the accessibility of connections with all regions of the country, in particular with front-line communities. The state has not reviewed prices for mass transportation segments since 2021, and currently there are no grounds for their increase.

“It is fundamentally important for the country to maintain the accessibility of transportation for citizens. That is why the tariffs for 2nd class tickets and in compartment and reserved seats remain socially oriented,” the company added.

Some changes will affect international routes. Ukrzaliznytsia will index tariffs for travel in SV cars of international trains by approximately 20%. Tickets at updated prices for foreign destinations will be sold on departure dates, starting from April 18, 2026. The company explains this step by the extremely high demand for premium seats in foreign connections, which are traditionally bought up the fastest.

The introduction of a mechanism for dynamic price adjustment depending on the occupancy of the car will require technical modernization of the carrier’s IT systems and will be implemented in a separate stage. It is expected that the new model will encourage passengers to choose less busy days for travel, which will positively affect the even operation of rolling stock. At the same time, the conditions for using rail transport will remain stable and affordable for the majority of Ukrainians.
