Ursula von der Leyen calls special security meeting due to situation in Iran
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the convening of a special meeting of the Security College on March 2 due to the situation in Iran. She stressed the importance of preventing further escalation of the conflict through Iranian attacks on regional partners.
“Given the situation in Iran, I will convene a special Security Council meeting on Monday,” she said in a statement.
In addition, Ursula von der Leyen expressed support and condolences for the Iranian strikes and the casualties they caused.
“Europe strongly condemns these unjustified attacks. These attacks are a flagrant violation of the UAE’s sovereignty and a clear violation of international law. And this is not the first time that the UAE has faced missile and drone attacks by Iran and its proxies.
Europe stands in full solidarity with partners across the region. I will continue to work with important regional partners,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
On February 28, Israel and the United States carried out a joint military operation, striking 30 targets in Iran. The Israeli army also struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. The military operation against Iran had been planned jointly for several months. Among the affected sites in Tehran are the presidential plaza and the intelligence headquarters.
