US Justice Department reviews legality of pardons approved by Biden
The US Department of Justice has begun reviewing the legality of a series of pardons approved by President Joe Biden. It is, in particular, about pardoning members of his family and those sentenced to death. About this reportedReuters agency.
The investigation has been assigned to the senior official of the US Department of Justice under the administration of the current President Donald Trump, the lawyer on issues of pardons Ed Martin. The subject of the review is whether Biden was “competent and whether other people used him with an AutoPen or other means.”
AutoPen is a device that automatically signs documents. Trump’s supporters speculated that Biden’s use of such a device could indicate his lack of full awareness of his actions. At the same time, there is no confirmation that exactly AutoPen was used when signing acts of pardon.
Martin’s investigation covers preemptive pardons that Biden granted to several members of his family, as well as decisions that commuted 37 death row inmates to life in prison. The letter does not specify which of Biden’s relatives is involved in the investigation, nor is it known who exactly instructed Martin to start the investigation.
We will remind, on December 2, 2024, Biden pardoned his son Gunter, saying that his case was considered differently than others. And on January 20, 2025, in the last minutes of his presidency, he preemptively pardoned five members of his family.
