Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Chrystia Freeland as advisor on economic development of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed former Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland as his economic development advisor. The head of state reported this in an address, noting:
“Today, I appointed Chrystia Freeland as an advisor on economic development”.
According to him, Freeland has deep expertise in economics, significant experience in attracting investments and implementing systemic economic changes.
The president emphasized that currently the key task for Ukraine is to strengthen internal stability — both for post-war recovery in the event of a quick diplomatic settlement, and for strengthening defense capabilities if the war lasts longer due to partners’ procrastination. According to the head of state, the country’s economic resilience directly affects its ability to defend and recover.
Chrystia Freeland served as Deputy Prime Minister of Canada from November 2019, and from August 2020 to December 2024, she headed the country’s Ministry of Finance. In September 2024, she left the post of Deputy Prime Minister, agreeing to become Canada’s Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine. Freeland is of Ukrainian origin, fluent in Ukrainian, and awarded the Order of Princess Olga, 1st degree.
It is also reported that the government plans to appoint German diplomatic representative Anka Feldhusen as the new business ombudsman in Ukraine – a corresponding draft decision has already been published by the Ministry of Economy.
