Children of war

Zelenskyy called on South Africa to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children

Deportation of children during wartime is not only a gross violation of international law, but also a tragic threat to entire generations. Russia’s war against Ukraine led to an unprecedented phenomenon: thousands of Ukrainian children were illegally taken to the territory of Russia, where they lose contact with their relatives, their culture and national identity. This issue has already gone beyond the purely Ukrainian context and has become a challenge for the entire international community. According to international norms, such actions amount to a war crime. Meanwhile, the world is increasingly aware of the scale of this humanitarian disaster, and it is global efforts that can help overcome this tragedy.

One of the central elements of international cooperation is the creation of the International Coalition for the Return of Illegally Deported Ukrainian Children. This initiative is designed to unite countries that adhere to the principles of the UN Charter and respect human rights in the fight for justice and the restoration of children’s rights. Participation in this coalition is not only a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine, but also an important step in strengthening the principles of international law.

Volodymyr Zelensky: appeal to the world community

During a meeting in Davos with the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to South Africa to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, who were illegally deported by Russia.

The head of state announced this in his publication in  social networks H.

“Held a meeting with the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. We discussed the need to unite the efforts of all countries that adhere to the principles of the UN Charter to achieve a just peace. We also considered the possibility of South Africa participating in the treatment and rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainians.” – noted Zelensky.

A global effort to solve the problem

The international community has already begun to respond to this issue. The countries of the European Union, the USA, Canada and a number of other countries supported the idea of creating a coalition. Some of them are ready to provide not only political, but also practical help, in particular in identifying the location of deported children, their return and providing rehabilitation. The United Nations, UNICEF and the International Criminal Court have also joined the process, stressing the importance of bringing those responsible for such crimes to justice.

Unfortunately, the challenges remain large-scale. According to Ukrainian authorities, only part of the deported children were identified and returned. A successful solution to this problem requires coordination at the level of governments, international organizations and civil society. A separate role in this process can be played by the countries of the Global South, in particular the Republic of South Africa, which has significant influence in international diplomacy.

Why this question affects everyone

Deportation of children during war has long-term consequences not only for the victims themselves, but also for the whole world. This is the threat of destruction of cultural identity, violation of children’s rights and undermining of the international order. A world that does not respond to such crimes risks becoming more vulnerable to violations of international law.

Global support in the fight against the deportation of Ukrainian children is a contribution to preserving humanity, the rule of law and common values. Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s call to the Republic of South Africa and all countries ready to act is a reminder that every voice in this struggle matters. Only together can the world ensure justice and give children back their homes, their families and their right to a happy future.
