17,400 civilians have died since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
As a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, numerous civilian casualties and large-scale destruction of housing stock have been recorded. According to official data, the number of civilian deaths has already exceeded 17,400 people. More than 43 thousand citizens have been injured to varying degrees of severity.
The Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in Armed Conflict, Office of the Prosecutor General, Yuriy Rud, has published statistics on losses among the least protected segments of the population. According to him, the aggression led to irreparable consequences for Ukrainian parents.
“Over 17,400 civilians died in an hour of a full-scale invasion and over 43,000 people were injured,” the official reported.
The representative of the prosecutor’s office paid special attention to the data on the injured children. Over 700 children were killed and over 2,400 minors were injured in shelling and attacks on settlements in an hour.
In addition to human losses, significant damage was inflicted on the country’s infrastructure. In total, over 320,000 civilian objects were damaged or completely destroyed. Among them are 86,000 residential buildings, over 5,000 educational institutions, 1,400 medical institutions, as well as hundreds of cultural and religious buildings.
Systematic attacks on non-military targets remain the main cause of high mortality rates among the civilian population. Law enforcement agencies continue to record the crime of war for further consideration of cases in international courts.
