The EU will provide 6.6 million euros to support mass media in Ukraine
The European Union allocates 6.6 million euros to support Ukrainian media. Investigative journalism projects, regional publications and journalists working in frontline areas will be able to receive funding. This was reported by the EU representation in Ukraine.
The initiatives are aimed at helping journalists so that they can continue to do their key work of informing citizens, exposing corruption, and documenting the facts of Russian aggression.
“Thanks to these three new projects, the European Union stands side by side with independent Ukrainian mass media. Our goal – strengthen Ukraine’s ability to provide reliable, relevant information, ensure public accountability, and document the truth about Russia’s war of aggression and its crimes”, – said EU Ambassador Katarina Maternova.
Three million euros will go to support media that cover events on the front and conduct investigations. Grants will go to 40 newsrooms working in the combat zone, provide individual mentoring and training for colleagues, and institutional support for teams of investigative journalists who expose corruption and war crimes in the Russian Federation.
Another two million euros will be allocated to the project “Strengthening the stability of the independent, free and pluralistic media ecosystem in Ukraine,” which is implemented by the “Reporters without Borders” organization. As part of this initiative, it is planned to provide emergency aid and protective equipment to 400 journalists, support media sustainability through the Journalist Trust Initiative and the International Fund for the Restoration of Ukrainian Mass Media (IFRUM), as well as advocacy for the inclusion of mass media in the program for the restoration of Ukraine.
Another 1.6 million euros will be directed to the project “Enhancing the capabilities of Ukrainian mass media for a sustainable future”, which is coordinated by the Institute of Mass Information and Detector Media.
“It will strengthen regional and local media, counter disinformation and provide legal, security and professional support to more than 500 journalists through 15 newly established regional media hubs”, – noted in the EU representative office.
