19.7 thousand applications in 2026: domestic violence remains a massive problem

Behind the statistics of domestic violence are the stories of people for whom their own home has ceased to be a place of safety. Over the past 5 years, 1,103,032 cases have been registered in Ukraine, and this scale shows that the problem remains acute even against the backdrop of war, forced displacement, economic stress and daily exhaustion. Women are most often the ones seeking help, but the share of children is increasing more and more noticeably in official data.
According to the information from the Unified State Registry of Domestic Violence Cases by Gender, the largest number of applications was recorded in 2021 — 284.2 thousand. After that, the figures decreased every year: in 2025, 113.4 thousand applications were filed with the registry, and in the first months of 2026 – 19.7 thousand. Compared to the same period in 2025, this is almost a third less, and compared to 2021 – 3.5 times less.
Despite the decline in official statistics, the average level of applications remains high: 6.6 thousand reports of domestic violence are registered in Ukraine every month. Such dynamics do not allow us to speak of the disappearance of the problem, since the registry records only those cases that victims or their relatives reported to the relevant services.
Among the applicants, women predominate, accounting for 80% of all applications. In 2026, 15,737 Ukrainian women reported domestic violence. Men seek help much less often, but their share in recent years has remained relatively stable – approximately 14-16%; In the first months of 2026, there were 2,757 such appeals.
The statistics on children deserve special attention, because its share is growing even against the background of an overall decrease in the number of applications. In 2021, appeals due to violence against children accounted for 2% of all reports, and in 2026 this figure increased to 6%. In the first months of the year, 1,239 such cases were registered, with every 5th appeal falling on the Vinnytsia region.
By regional distribution, for the fourth year in a row, the most reports of domestic violence come from the Dnipropetrovsk region. From January to March 2026, 2,216 cases were recorded there. The Odessa region took 2nd place with 1,284 appeals, and the Vinnytsia region took 3rd place with 1,277 applications.
In Chernihiv region, the number of registered cases of domestic violence has decreased by 6 times in 5 years, in Kyiv – by 5 times, and in Lviv and Volyn regions – by 4 times. Such indicators indicate a noticeable drop in officially recorded appeals in some regions, although the real picture always depends on the willingness of victims to report violence.
In child statistics, victims aged 5-14 most often appear, and the perpetrator in such cases is most often the father. Because of this, the increase in the proportion of appeals against children looks especially alarming, because violence occurs where the child is most dependent on adults and has the least opportunities to protect himself.
