A chemical leak occurred at an enterprise in the Kharkiv region

In the Chuguyiv district of the Kharkiv region, the chief engineer of a chemical enterprise was informed of suspicion due to land contamination with substances harmful to the environment. This was reported on May 16 by the press service of the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office.

According to the investigation, the enterprise, which specializes in the production of chemical products, detergents and organic substances, had been operating in violation of environmental legislation for a long time. The 45-year-old engineer responsible for environmental safety did not control the operation of technological equipment and production processes, as a result of which a leak of pollutants occurred in the village of Slobozhanske.

«As a result, a leak of pollutants occurred on the territory of the enterprise, which got into the soil. The conclusions of the comprehensive forensic examination confirmed a significant excess of ammonium, nitrates, phosphorus and other substances hazardous to the environment in the soil,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The forensic engineering and environmental examination established that the cause of the pollution was the economic activity of the enterprise and leaks from technological equipment.

The sanction of the article under which the engineer was suspected provides for a fine of 17,000 to 68,000 hryvnias or deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to three years.
