The school year will not start in the territories of the Kursk region of Russia, which are controlled by the Ukrainian armed forces
In the territories of the Kursk region of Russia, which are currently controlled by the Ukrainian armed forces, the school year will not start due to Ukraine’s compliance with the norms of international law. This information was confirmed by the Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi v interview for the BBC.
Lisovii noted that the issue of the beginning of the educational process in the territories under the control of Ukraine was discussed at a serious level. However, Ukraine decided not to start the school year in these territories, adhering to international norms. The minister emphasized that Ukraine will not act like Russia and strives to provide better conditions.
Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Education Mykhailo Vynnytskyi noted that the Ministry of Education will probably have to develop a plan to ensure the education of children in the territories of Kursk Oblast controlled by Ukraine, if the situation remains unchanged. According to him, the possible plan will not involve the transfer of children to the territory of Ukraine, but only the provision of their education on the ground.
Armed clashes on the territory of the Kursk region began on August 7, when the first unofficial reports of a breakthrough of the Ukrainian military across the border appeared. Against the background of these events, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of provocations.
The head of the Kursk region, Oleksiy Smirnov, said that 133,000 people were evacuated from the border areas, and another 19,000 people remain in dangerous areas. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, first confirmed the fighting in Kurshchyna on August 12. As of August 27, Ukrainian forces already control 1,294 km² of Russian territory. According to the Washington Post, Ukraine also maintains the Suja gas measuring station, located about 8 kilometers deep into Russian territory.
Zelensky emphasized that this operation is one of Ukraine’s largest investments in the process of freeing its citizens from Russian captivity. A military commandant’s office, headed by Major General Eduard Moskalyov, has already been established in the controlled territories. Ukrainian authorities have also opened a hotline for residents of the Kursk region who wish to evacuate, and are considering the possibility of organizing a humanitarian corridor to Sumy.
