A key power plant, which is critical to the safety of the ZNPP, was attacked

The Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant, whose switchgear helps transmit electricity to the captured Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, was subjected to a powerful attack on the morning of June 4. This was reported by the press service of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The IAEA team at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant saw light smoke from the Zaporizhzhia TPP and heard sounds of military activity. According to available information, the thermal power plant workers are in shelters.

The agency said that the incident raises serious concerns about the only power line that still supplies power to the Zaporizhzhia NPP. It has been disconnected several times in recent weeks, after which the plant was dependent on emergency diesel generators needed to cool its six reactors.

The power line remains connected for now. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the attack must stop immediately to avoid a prolonged loss of power to the Zaporizhia NPP.

On the night of June 3, 2026, the captured Zaporizhia NPP experienced its 17th blackout since the plant was seized by Russian forces and its fifth since the beginning of the year. The situation surrounding the Zaporizhia NPP’s power supply remains one of the key risks to nuclear safety.
