A large-scale inspection of orphanages and medical diagnoses of their residents begins in Ukraine
Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko announced the start of a nationwide inspection of orphanages, as well as the diagnoses that their children receive. He wrote about it on his social networks.
The impetus for this decision was the established facts of cruel treatment of children in different regions of the country. The Prosecutor General cited a number of episodes indicating serious problems in the system. In particular, in the Mykolaiv region, children aged 8–10 were fixed with belts in cribs for babies, which led to a changed position of their limbs.
In Volyn, social services did not even react to the case when parents gave the child alcohol. Also, according to Kravchenko, there were situations when healthy children were diagnosed with severe psychiatric disorders and prescribed psychotropic drugs only to charge the institution an additional 20 thousand hryvnias.
“Law enforcement agencies must begin work immediately. As of today, Ukraine has a zero tolerance principle for violence and neglect of children,“, – Kravchenko emphasized.
The Prosecutor General reported that he had already identified a new deputy who will oversee the direction of protecting children’s rights. He also sent official appeals to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Policy, and heads of regional administrations, calling for comprehensive inspections of the conditions of children’s stay and the correctness of medical reports. Ruslan Kravchenko emphasized that if violations are discovered, the prosecutor’s office will act “quickly and harshly”.
