Africa records largest cholera outbreak in 25 years
Africa is experiencing its largest cholera outbreak in 25 years, with nearly 300,000 confirmed and suspected cases. About this reportsReuters citing the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that a total of about 300,000 cases of cholera and suspected cases of the disease have been registered on the continent, which has already led to more than 7,000 deaths.”,- the message states.
The largest spikes in recent weeks have been recorded in Angola and Burundi, with the population’s lack of access to clean water cited as one of the reasons.
Meanwhile, the outbreak in Congo has been partially contained, with new cases declining. Improvements are also being seen in South Sudan and Somalia. However, the outlook remains grim for conflict-affected regions.
Cholera is a severe and potentially fatal diarrheal disease that spreads rapidly when sewage and drinking water are not properly treated.
