Children of war

After strikes on Kyiv’s heating networks, children are temporarily placed in working kindergartens and schools

The situation with heat supply in the capital has again directly affected the work of educational institutions, forcing the city authorities to quickly look for solutions that will allow the educational process not to be interrupted and at the same time not to expose children to danger due to low temperatures in the premises.

Forced measures regarding the stay of children in institutions

In the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, some kindergartens and schools were temporarily left without heating due to serious damage to heating networks. Under these conditions, the district administration decided to organize the stay of children in those institutions where heat is preserved, and for high school students – to switch to a distance learning format.

Damage to the heating infrastructure was a consequence of massive attacks on Kyiv, as a result of which one of the key heat suppliers of the Darnytskyi district suffered significant technical losses. This led to a complete cessation of the supply of heat carrier to certain microdistricts where educational institutions are located.

To prevent accidents and further destruction of heating systems, specialists were forced to carry out a technical drain of the heat carrier, including in the buildings of kindergartens and schools. Under such circumstances, keeping children in cold rooms was deemed unsafe, and the resumption of the institutions was impossible until the repair work was completed.

To avoid a situation where children are left at home unattended, the district administration proposed a mechanism for temporarily placing kindergarten students in working institutions where heating is maintained and there are necessary conditions for the children to stay.

Distance learning has been introduced for students in schools that do not have heat supply, which allows them to continue the educational process without risk to health. In parallel, the administration has undertaken to constantly inform parents about the progress of repair work and possible changes in the operating mode of institutions.

Institutions that are temporarily left without heat

Among the kindergartens that are currently unable to accept children due to the lack of heating, in particular, ZDO No. 59 on Bazhana Avenue, ZDO No. 99 in Polisky Lane, ZDO No. 133 on Kharkiv Highway and ZDO No. 138 on Revutskoho Street. The full list of institutions is published in the district administration’s announcements.

In particular, Lyceum No. 105 on Simferopolskaya, Lyceum No. 127 on Yalta, Lyceum No. 160 on Lytvynskogo Street, and Secondary Education Institution No. 217 in Polissky Lane have been transferred to the distance learning format.

Restoration of heat supply and further actions

Emergency services are already working to eliminate damage to heating networks, but the timing of the full restoration of heat supply depends on the complexity of the work and the general situation with the city’s energy infrastructure. The district authorities assure that parents will be informed promptly so that families can plan their children’s schedules in advance.

The city administration emphasizes that the heating supply in Kyiv remains vulnerable due to constant attacks on the infrastructure, and the schedules of power outages in areas without heating are adjusted taking into account safety and minimizing discomfort.

Parents are recommended to carefully monitor messages from kindergarten and school administrations, since it is there that information is provided about the child’s temporary place of stay or the format of education. Children from institutions without heating will be accepted in other institutions with the consent of their parents, and schoolchildren will continue their studies online until the heat is restored.

The measures introduced demonstrate the city authorities’ desire to ensure the safety of children and maintain the continuity of the educational process even in the face of serious infrastructure losses and prolonged pressure on the capital’s life support system.
