Almost 1900 medical facilities in Ukraine damaged as a result of Russian attacks

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, enemy troops have damaged 1663 medical facilities, and another 222 have been completely destroyed. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The largest losses in medical infrastructure were in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Dnipro, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. The Ministry of Health notes that it is currently impossible to obtain complete information on the extent of damage to hospitals in the temporarily occupied territories.

In addition to the destruction of medical facilities, Russian troops damaged 221 ambulances, destroyed 261 and seized 125 vehicles.

Despite this, Ukraine is actively rebuilding its medical infrastructure. To date, 532 medical facilities have been fully restored, and another 353 have been partially restored. Most facilities have been restored in Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Kyiv, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions. Mostly, hospitals that had sustained damage, such as broken windows, destroyed roofs and damaged facades, were restored.

Experts estimate that more than $14 billion is needed to fully rebuild Ukraine’s healthcare system over the next 10 years, as Russia is not only destroying hospitals, but also destroying ambulances and pharmacies, and taking away medical equipment and medicines.
