Almost 70,000 Ukrainian women defend their Motherland: the Ministry of Defense released data on the number of women in the Armed Forces
During a meeting with Canada’s ambassador for women, peace and security, Jacqueline O’Neill, Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine Nataliya Kalmykova said that as of January 2024, almost 70,000 women are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to Kalmykova, out of 66.9 thousand women currently serving in the Armed Forces:
- 47.2 thousand – military personnel;
- 6.5 thousand are in managerial positions;
- about 4,000 are serving on the front line.
The Deputy Minister of Defense emphasized that Ukraine continues to actively attract women to the Armed Forces and creates proper conditions of service for them.
“We continue to implement the policy of attracting, developing and retaining human capital, an important component of which is the principles of gender equality in the military. Legally, today we actually have no obstacles. Now our task is to practically implement these norms. It is not only about providing women’s form and creating living conditions. We have formulated a policy on the use of gender-sensitive language, are launching courses on the leadership qualities of female military personnel, and are increasing the level of monitoring of violations of the rights of female military personnelKalmykova stressed.
Jacqueline O’Neill assured that Canada will continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to achieve gender equality in the Armed Forces and emphasized the importance of cooperation in this area.
“We are constantly learning from you and understand how difficult it is to carry out reforms during wartime. We want to make sure that Ukraine receives the best possible support in its efforts to implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda. We are your partners, you can rely on us”, – said the ambassador of Canada.
