American importers are buying up Chinese goods en masse in anticipation of Trump’s arrival
American importers have significantly increased purchases of electronics, clothing, toys and other products from China. This is due to Donald Trump’s threats to introduce tariffs on Chinese goods, which can range from 10% to 60%. About this informs Reuters.
The increase in shipments from China occurred mainly in the last quarter of the year, when American companies rushed to stockpile products ahead of possible restrictions. Thanks to this, imports from China to the USA increased significantly over the year.
According to the General Administration of Customs of China, in December, exports from the PRC to the United States reached a record $48.8 billion, which is 4.9% higher than the previous year. At the same time, imports from the USA to China decreased by 0.1% and amounted to $15.3 billion.
During Trump’s first term as president, he mostly focused on tariffs on Chinese parts and components. Tariffs on finished products are currently expected, which is why US importers are trying to bring in as many goods as possible before the introduction of new restrictions.
The Canadian company “Descartes Systems Group”, which is engaged in the analysis of trade data, noted that in December, about 451,000 40-foot containers with goods from China were unloaded at US seaports. This is 14.5% more than in the same period of the previous year.
According to the results of 2024, imports from China to the US of goods such as bedding, plastic toys, cars and other products increased by 15% compared to 2023.
