Another country near Russia’s borders seeks to acquire nuclear weapons
Another country neighboring Russia wants to get nuclear weapons. Lithuania plans to consider amending the Constitution if NATO allies offer to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory. This was stated by the Minister of Defense Doville Shakalene, informs Delphi.
According to Shakalene, Lithuania should consider amending Article 137 of the Constitution, which prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on the country’s territory. She noted that this issue may become relevant if concrete proposals are received from the Alliance partners.
“So far, we have not received any official initiatives from the allies, but we must be ready for any scenario. Therefore, I consider it necessary to initiate a deeper discussion on this issue.” – said Shakalene.
She also emphasized that Lithuania should adhere to the principle of immediate defense readiness. Although the country does not currently face a direct threat of military invasion, in the event of a sudden crisis there will be no time to prepare.
“Every citizen, every institution, every unit must be ready to act within the resources available. We must change things now and act as if war could start tomorrow.” – emphasized the minister.
