Bail was not posted for People’s Deputy Shufrych in the treason case
As of now, no bail has been posted for Nestor Shufrych, a member of parliament from the banned Opposition Platform — For Life party (OPZH), Nestor Shufrych, who is suspected of high treason. His defense attorneys are trying to get the amount set by the court reduced. This was reported by lawyer Valeriy Bunyak.
Shufrych’s son noted that funds for bail are currently being sought, and assistance from the deputy’s party members is being considered as one of the possible options. Earlier, on January 8, the Kyiv Court of Appeal chose Shufrych as an alternative measure of restraint – bail in the amount of over 33 million hryvnias.
Criminal proceedings against Shufrych have been under investigation since 2023. On September 3, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced the sending of an indictment to the court against the people’s deputy of the 9th convocation Nestor Shufrych and his former assistant Vyacheslav Cherepany. They are accused of financing actions aimed at forcibly changing the constitutional order, seizing state power, and changing the state border of Ukraine. In addition, Shufrych is accused of high treason.
According to the investigation, after the temporary occupation of Crimea, the defendants ensured the re-registration of a house and land plot in the town of Simeiz under Russian law. The deputy purchased this property back in 2013 through a controlled company and trusted persons.
In 2016, according to law enforcement officers, a contract was signed with an illegal paramilitary formation, the “FGUP “Okhrana” of the Russian Guard for the Republic of Crimea”, to protect this property. Later, according to the investigation, the Russian Guard was transferred more than 648.7 thousand Russian rubles for the security services provided.
Shufrych is also suspected of cooperating with the FSB of the Russian Federation and carrying out the tasks of one of the former deputy secretaries of the National Security and Defense Council, who left for Moscow in 2014. According to the investigation, the deputy systematically disseminated the theses of the aggressor state in public speeches and interviews and carried out subversive activities against Ukraine, supporting the pro-Russian vector of its development.
Currently, both defendants in the case are in custody and deny the charges. Shufrych, in particular, states that “there is no treason in his actions.”
