Biden should not have promised Ukraine NATO membership: Trump
Former US President Donald Trump said that his opponent in the last election, Joe Biden, never promised Ukraine NATO membership. He expressed his conviction that it was Ukraine’s intentions to join the North Atlantic Alliance that caused Russia’s invasion.
Trump said this on the air of the podcast All In.
“I have been hearing for 20 years that if Ukraine joins NATO, it will be a real problem for Russia. I have heard this for a long time. I think that’s why this war started“, said Trump, expressing his opinion about the beginning of the conflict in the east of Europe.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with Biden, who, according to him, spoke incorrectly about the future of Ukraine in the context of NATO.
“Biden has been saying the wrong things all the time, and one of the wrong things is that he said that Ukraine will join NATO… When I heard him say it, I thought: this guy is going to start a war“, he added.
Trump also stated that under his presidency, a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine would not have taken place.
“For four years, no one even said that Russia would go to Ukraine. This would never happen. Russia was not going to attack Ukraine. As soon as I left (the White House), they started lining up at the borders“, Trump said.
Earlier in his interview with TIME, US President Joe Biden noted that NATO membership is not necessary to ensure peace in Ukraine, but he admitted that Ukraine must win the war waged against it by Russia in order to have a chance to join the alliance. .
