Bodies of 1,000 dead servicemen returned to Ukraine from Russia
On August 19, within the framework of previously reached agreements, repatriation measures took place, during which 1,000 bodies were returned to Ukraine, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian servicemen. About this reported Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Among them were five captured Ukrainian soldiers who died in captivity. They were on the “seriously wounded and seriously ill” lists for exchange, according to agreements reached in Istanbul during the second round of talks. Russia continues to delay fulfilling its obligations, while Ukraine insists on the immediate release of all seriously ill and seriously wounded prisoners and continues to fight for the return of every citizen.
Defenders from the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Kursk directions are among the returnees “on the shield” today. In the near future, law enforcement investigators together with experts from expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will conduct all necessary examinations and body identification procedures.
The repatriation was made possible thanks to the efforts of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Center under the SBU, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service and other structures of the security and defense sector of Ukraine.
