Branches of the National Memorial Cemetery are planned to be opened in five regions of Ukraine

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs is selecting land plots to create branches of the National Memorial Cemetery in five regions of Ukraine. This was announced by the Minister of Veterans Affairs Natalia Kalmykova, but she did not specify which regions are being considered.

“It is planned to create branches of the National Veterans’ Union. But now we are just at the selection stage sites in the regions. That is, we are in the process. By the end of the year, we plan to approve design and estimate documentation for five pilot sites,” Kalmykova noted.

The issue of creating a National War Memorial Cemetery arose back in 2022. Initially, the possibility of using plots in the “Lysa Hora” tract in Kyiv was studied for this purpose, but later the government settled on the option in the Kyiv region.

In August 2023, the state institution “National Military Memorial Cemetery” was established, which commissioned the construction of the cemetery.

The final decision on the location was made in March 2024 – the NVMK with an area of over 265 hectares was placed in the Gatny territorial community in the Kyiv region. This decision caused dissatisfaction among some military families and local residents. People have expressed concerns that the construction could lead to deforestation and contamination of groundwater, which provides the settlement with drinking water.
