British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has decided to resign
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told his inner circle that he has decided to resign. This is reported by the Daily Mail, citing its own sources. According to the publication’s interlocutor, Starmer will also determine the timetable for his resignation from the post of Prime Minister.
“Keir understands the political reality. He understands that the current chaos is unsustainable. He simply wants to act with dignity and in the way he sees fit. He will set the timetable,” the article says.
Another source noted that it is currently unknown when Starmer will make an official statement on this issue. At the same time, some of his senior officials are advising him not to rush into making statements until the first poll results and vote count data for the by-election in Makerfield are available.
“Morgan McSweeney (the former chief of staff to the prime minister) is constantly urging him to hold on. He claims that if the fight is tight or if Andy is on the verge of defeat, then he still has a chance, ”said one of the ministers.
However, one of Starmer’s supporters said that the prime minister does not plan to take risks while waiting for the results of the by-election.
On May 12, Starmer said that he would not leave his post, despite the crushing defeat of Labour in local elections and increasing pressure within the party. On May 11, Keir Starmer also said that he would not give up his duties as the country’s leader after the failed election. He warned that the country risks going down a “dark path”.
“I know people are unhappy with the way things are in Britain, unhappy with politics and some are unhappy with me. I know there are those who don’t believe me and I know I have to prove them wrong,” Starmer said in London during a crucial speech.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party was defeated in local elections in the UK on May 8. Instead, Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist Reform Party won more than 300 seats.
The AP agency wrote that Starmer’s popularity has fallen sharply after a series of miscalculations since he took office in July 2024. His government is struggling to deliver promised economic growth, rebuild a neglected public service system and alleviate a cost-of-living crisis – tasks that have been significantly complicated by the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has cut off oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
