EU and the world

By the end of the century, the population of Europe will decrease significantly: Ukrainians will decrease by 61%

By 2100, a significant decrease in the population is predicted in Europe. According to estimates, Ukraine will experience one of the largest reductions — up to 61%, informs Visual Capitalist.

According to the UN forecast for the world population for 2024, Ukraine is among the countries where the largest relative decrease in the number of inhabitants is expected between 2025 and 2100.

The reasons are primarily the fall in the birth rate: by the end of the century, according to forecasts, the death rate will exceed the birth rate in all European countries. Demographic growth is expected only in eight European countries.

The strongest population reduction is predicted for the countries of Eastern and Southern Europe, where Ukraine leads the list with a projected population decrease of 61% over 75 years. In addition to the low birth rate, the UN also notes the impact of migration — many Ukrainians are leaving the country. While in a number of Western European countries, such as Great Britain and France, positive population dynamics are expected due to immigration.

At the same time, the birth rate in Ukraine is rapidly decreasing. During the full-scale war, according to various estimates, about 2 million children left the country. Many of them are currently studying for free in schools or universities in Europe, and the likelihood of their return remains low.
