California court suspends mass layoffs of civil servants by Trump administration
A federal judge in California has temporarily blocked the Donald Trump administration’s plan to lay off thousands of federal workers. About this informs Reuters.
During the hearing, District Judge William Alsup ruled that the Office of Personnel Management does not have the authority to make mass layoff decisions at federal agencies. He also criticized the actions of the Office, which put pressure on departments, forcing them to fire employees hired less than a year ago.
The massive cuts are part of a broader strategy by Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who has been tapped to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Their goal is to reduce the number of civil servants.
The ruling requires the Office of Personnel Management to withdraw an order that required agencies to identify a list of non-critical positions recently filled and cut those employees. At the same time, representatives of the Trump administration claim that their demand was only for a “workforce analysis” and not for immediate layoffs.
