Changes in assistance to Ukrainian refugees in Ireland from September 1

Ireland became one of the countries that opened its doors to thousands of Ukrainian citizens who fled the war. However, starting from September 1, 2024, the Irish government is introducing significant changes to the program of providing cash assistance to refugees from Ukraine. This decision caused concern among the Ukrainian community and organizations that provide support to refugees.

Changes in the amount of financial assistance

According to the new decision of the Irish government, starting from September 1, 2024, Ukrainian refugees will receive much smaller cash payments. Instead of the standard rate of €232, adults will receive €38.80 per week and minors €29.80. These changes will only apply to refugees living in accommodation provided by the Irish Government where they receive full board.

Reasons for the policy change

The Irish government justifies its decision by the need to optimize the budget and improve the efficiency of resource use. According to government officials, the payments of €232 were too high to meet the minimum needs of refugees in the context of free housing and food. Reducing payments will save significant funds, which are planned to be directed to other important social programs.

The decision to reduce the amount of payments caused a mixed reaction among the Ukrainian community in Ireland. Many refugees express concern that the new payments will not cover even basic needs. Organizations supporting Ukrainian refugees call on the government to reconsider its decision and find other ways to optimize the budget without harming the most vulnerable sections of the population.

Consequences for Ukrainian refugees

A reduction in cash payments could have serious consequences for Ukrainian refugees. First, many of them will have to look for additional sources of income, which can be difficult in a new country with limited employment opportunities. Second, a decrease in the level of financial support can lead to a deterioration in the living conditions of refugees, especially those who have health problems or care for children.

Against the background of changes in the program of assistance to Ukrainian refugees, it is important to pay attention to the long-term consequences of this decision. Ireland should consider creating new support programs to help integrate refugees into society, ensure their employment and develop the skills they need to become self-reliant.
