Cruelty among teenagers is a problem of our time: the incident in the Rivne Lyceum
Today’s world is increasingly confronted with disturbing manifestations of cruelty among teenagers. Cases of violence in schools, bullying, bullying and even physical injury become not only the subject of news, but also a painful mirror of society. Teenagers, who are still forming their moral principles, sometimes resort to actions that go beyond the permissible limits, endangering the health and even the lives of others. These phenomena give rise to many questions: what makes children show aggression? Why are such incidents increasingly happening in places where children should feel safe? One of these cases was the incident at the Rivne Lyceum that happened on November 21, 2024. His circumstances cause considerable resonance and make us think about the reasons for such situations.
The incident at the Rivne Lyceum
On January 19, the police of the Rivne region reported, that a 14-year-old student brought a knife to school. Presumably, this object was meant to be a means of showing off in front of classmates. During the demonstration of the knife, one of the boys received a stab wound in the thigh. The teenager who caused the injury claims that it happened by accident and that he did not intend to harm his friend.
At first, the victim and his mother did not make any claims. But later the woman turned to the police with a statement, which became the basis for the opening of criminal proceedings under the article on intentional minor bodily injury. Currently, a pre-trial investigation is underway, which should establish all the details of this incident.
Causes of aggression among teenagers
Such cases do not occur in a vacuum. Cruelty among children and adolescents often has a complex of causes:
- The influence of the family. Aggressive behavior in the family, lack of attention or proper upbringing can become the basis for the formation of destructive behavior patterns in a child.
- Social factors. The modern world, in particular social networks, often normalize aggression, presenting it as a way of self-affirmation. Teenagers wear these models, trying to attract the attention of their peers.
- The impact of bullying. Often, aggressors themselves become victims of bullying, and, not finding other ways, resort to cruelty as a way of defense or self-affirmation.
- Insufficient control in schools. Often, schools underestimate the level of conflicts between students or do not have mechanisms for their effective resolution.
- Emotional instability. Adolescence is accompanied by emotional ups and downs, which can provoke impulsive actions.
The incident at the Rivne Lyceum emphasizes the urgent need of society to pay more attention to the psychological health of teenagers, to educate them to respect others and to ensure safe conditions in educational institutions. Only systematic work with children, their families and teachers can help reduce the level of violence among young people.
