Danger to children: shooting at a children’s entertainment facility in Zaporizhia

The war in Ukraine daily endangers the lives of children in different regions of the country. In these conditions, children face not only danger from the Russian army, but also cases of violence from the citizens of Ukraine itself. Increasing psychological tension, proliferation of weapons, aggressive behavior and loss of self-control in individuals lead to incidents in public spaces, including those where minors are present. This creates an additional dimension of threats that cannot be ignored. The event that happened in Zaporizhzhia confirms this. An armed man entered the premises of a children’s entertainment facility, threatened two girls and opened fire.

Shooting in broad daylight: an incident in Zaporozhye

In the Komunarsky district of Zaporizhzhia there was an incident that gained publicity not because of the number of victims, but because of the circumstances and context. A 32-year-old man began threatening two girls in the building of a children’s entertainment facility located in a city park. He insulted them, humiliated them, showed obvious contempt, and then he took out a traumatic gun and fired several shots. All this happened in a room where other children were.

Police reported, which detained the intruder on the same day. He has already been notified of suspicion under the most severe part of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — hooliganism with the use of weapons. It is known that the man was detained in accordance with the procedure of Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office is preparing a motion to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention. If found guilty, he faces up to seven years in prison.

It is currently unknown whether the attacker had previous psychiatric diagnoses or conflicts with the law. However, the very fact that in the midst of a full-scale war, in a public children’s space, an armed man appears and arranges fights with minors, proves that the rear is conditional. And even the most familiar place can become a risk zone.

Attacks on kindergartens, schools, hospitals, and houses are no longer exceptions, but a routine component of war, which reveals the worst not only in the enemy, but also in some of its own citizens. People who have lost self-control, are in a state of constant stress, often abuse alcohol or lose their sense of boundaries, begin to show aggression exactly where there is less resistance – against women and children.

Against this background, the number of domestic conflicts, cases of hooliganism, threats, and armed incidents in public places is increasing. And if earlier parents were wary of shelling, today they have to pay attention to another war – the war for a safe environment for the child inside the country.

How to keep your child safe during war: practical steps for parents

In today’s conditions, the basic safety of a child is not only the task of the state or the police, but the daily responsibility of each parent. Therefore, it is important not to delay talking with the child about dangers – both external and internal – and gradually teach him to recognize threats, act correctly in emergency situations and report anything suspicious to adults.

First, the child must be able to quickly assess the situation. Parents should teach her to recognize signs of unstable or threatening behavior: shouting, inappropriate gestures, aggressive facial expressions, attempts to approach or engage in conversation. This isn’t a lesson in ethics, it’s a survival skill. If such behavior is directed at her or someone nearby, the child should move away, not make contact, and immediately contact the staff of the institution or nearby adults.

Secondly, in the conditions of war, a child should not be left unattended even in places that are considered “children’s”. Parents should check not only the institution, but also, as much as possible, the surrounding environment: is there security, is there limited access for outsiders, is there a button to call the police. In the case of the incident with the attacker in Zaporozhye, it was the lack of immediate intervention that allowed him to get his weapon and pull the trigger.

Thirdly, the child should have a clear algorithm of actions in the event of an emergency: where to run, who to call, where the phone is, how to inform parents. For the younger ones, there is a simple rule: if something scares you, go to an adult worker and call your mother. For teenagers, do not argue with the aggressor, do not react, retreat to a safe distance and ask for help. If there is a hint of the presence of weapons, move away silently, hide, do not provoke.

Fourth, the child should know the basic rules of behavior in public places: do not go outside the territory of the institution without permission, do not communicate with suspicious strangers, always have a note with the phone numbers of the parents. It is also worth teaching her what the police look like, how to contact a security guard, who can be considered a safe adult in a crisis situation.

And most importantly, the child should know that his reaction is important. She does not have to tolerate, remain silent or be ashamed to say that someone was dangerous, even if everything turned out. Parents, in turn, should take any signal seriously – even if the child does not fully understand what happened.

The incident in Zaporizhzhia is a signal that children’s spaces need not only protection, but also vigilant public control. At a time when Russia is shelling our cities daily, we cannot afford internal indifference. A child’s safety is not only about the absence of an explosion, but about the certainty that someone will not appear nearby in the park, in a cafe, at school, who will decide to unleash his own aggression on the most vulnerable.
