Several representatives of the US Democratic Party have called for an official investigation into billionaire Elon Musk’s alleged contacts with Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the data Reuters, two influential Democratic senators, Jack Reed and Jeanne Shaheen, in a letter to the Pentagon and the Department of Justice emphasized the need to examine US national security in the context of Musk’s ties to Moscow.
The senators drew attention to Musk’s numerous phone calls with Russian officials, raising suspicions that SpaceX, Musk’s company, has billions in contracts with the Pentagon and intelligence agencies. In the letter, the senators call for an investigation into whether these contacts are grounds for limiting Musk’s access to certain contracts or even excluding him from some government-funded programs.
“Mr. Musk’s interactions with Russian officials raise serious questions about his credibility as a government contractor“, Rida and Shahin said in a joint statement.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported on Musk’s possible contacts with the Russian side, but this appeal to US officials is the first call for an official investigation.
The aggravation of the question of Musk’s ties with Russia is taking place against the background of Musk’s support for former President Donald Trump. Musk has reportedly invested heavily in the campaign of Trump, who intends to run for president again.
