Detention of Iranian vessel by US forces causes transport collapse in the Strait of Hormuz

Commercial traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz virtually ground to a halt on Monday after a brief weekend blockade. The situation in the region escalated after U.S. forces seized an Iranian cargo ship for the first time since the current escalation.

The incident occurred near the port of Jask in the Gulf of Oman as the ship headed toward the strait. These actions by the US Navy have significantly increased the risks for international shipowners and expanded the potential danger zone in the Persian Gulf region.

Over the past seven weeks, the intensity of shipping through this waterway has decreased to a historic low. Iran continues to strengthen control over the strait, calling it a response to military operations conducted by the US and Israel. Despite hopes for de-escalation that emerged on Friday after the parties’ statements about the possible opening of the passage, another round of tensions led to the renewal of transport paralysis and a resurgence of world oil prices.

“This was the first such step during the current blockade, which raised rates for shipowners and expanded the area considered risky for the passage,”observators of the foreign agency Bloomberg noted.

Special attention in the conflict zone was attracted by The Nova Crest tanker, currently heading south of Larak Island. The vessel is under sanctions by the UK, the European Union and Switzerland for its alleged involvement in Russian oil trafficking schemes. The tanker is heading to the United Arab Emirates, close to the epicentre of the conflict. Its presence in the strait during the active phase of the blockade adds complexity to the overall security situation and emphasizes the global nature of the crisis.

“Vessel traffic through this waterway has been reduced to a minimum as Iran tightens control in response to US and Israeli strikes,” energy market analysts emphasized.

The seizure of an Iranian vessel by the US fleet signals the transition of the crisis to a phase of direct forceful intervention in trade operations.

The international community is watching the dynamics in the Persian Gulf with alarm, as the prolonged paralysis of oil product supplies threatens the stability of the global economy. Shipowners are forced to look for alternative routes, which significantly increases logistics costs and cargo delivery times.

Further developments will depend on the reaction of official Tehran to Washington’s actions and the willingness of the parties to return to diplomatic consultations. Currently, the presence of powerful military groups in the Gulf of Oman makes the situation unpredictable. The Strait of Hormuz remains the most vulnerable point in the global energy infrastructure, where any incident instantly affects global financial markets.
