Donald Trump called for an investigation into the “Ukrainian impeachment” of 2019
US President Donald Trump called to investigate the circumstances of the so-called “Ukrainian impeachment” 2019.
“The Ukrainian impeachment against me was much more extensive and a bigger deception than Watergate. I hope the appropriate authorities, including Congress, investigate this, Trump said, calling then-Deputy Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff “dishonest and corrupt.”
Under the “Ukrainian impeachment” Trump is referring to the first attempt to remove him from the presidency in 2019. Then the Democrats accused him of putting pressure on Kyiv during a phone conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, demanding an investigation into the activities of Joe Biden’s family, including his son Gunter, in Ukraine. This was considered the use of presidential powers in one’s own political interests.
Trump denied these accusations and called the situation a “witch hunt”. The House of Representatives impeached him, but the Republican-dominated Senate acquitted him.
Nowadays, calling those events “deception” and “worse than Watergate”, Trump claims that Democrats acted illegally, violated procedures, and that the investigation itself was politically motivated. He is actually pushing for a review of the events and political accountability of his opponents, including Senator Adam Schiff, who at the time played a key role in the investigation.
