Donald Trump for the first time recognized Russia as an aggressor in the war against Ukraine
US President Donald Trump for the first time openly called Russia the aggressor in the war against Ukraine and admitted that it is Russia that will suffer greater losses. reports Politico.
“8,000 soldiers from both countries died this week. A little more from Russia, but when you are the aggressor, you lose more”, – said Trump told reporters, commenting on the losses of both sides.
At the same time, Trump did not rule out that he may have to personally intervene in the negotiation process, since “Zelensky and Putin hate each other so much that they cannot talk”. He admitted that the war, which he planned to end quickly, turned out to be much more difficult for him.
Recall that earlier Trump avoided direct condemnations of Moscow. In February, his administration, along with Russia and North Korea, voted against a UN resolution confirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The USA also opposed the G7 statement, which directly called Russia an aggressor.
In April, Trump laid the blame for the war on Ukraine, saying that “you can’t go to war against someone 20 times bigger than you and expect them to just give you a few missiles. However, in the summer of 2025, his position towards the Kremlin changed significantly. The US administration began increasing pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who blocked Trump’s attempts to hold direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. These steps indicate Washington’s tougher course in relation to Moscow.
