Donald Trump is considering the nomination of Richard Grenell for the post of special envoy for settlement of the war between Russia and Ukraine
Donald Trump plans to appoint Richard Grenell, the former head of US intelligence, as a special envoy to resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine. About this informs Reuters.
Grenell, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s past presidency, could become a key figure in efforts to end the war.
According to the publication, the newly elected US president is considering the possibility of creating the position of a special envoy focused exclusively on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. It could be one of his first diplomatic moves after returning to the White House. However, the decision to create such a position has not yet been finalized, and Grenell is not the only contender.
During the election campaign, Trump declared his intention to end the war quickly, although he did not reveal the details of his plans. Some of Grenell’s proposals, particularly regarding the creation of “autonomous zones” as a way to resolve the conflict, may cause skepticism among Ukrainian leaders. He also spoke against the immediate accession of Ukraine to NATO, which coincides with the position of a number of Trump’s allies.
Grenell’s supporters emphasize his experience in European affairs and diplomacy. In addition to his work in Germany, he was the special envoy of the US president in negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Trump’s press secretary Carolyn Levitt declined to comment on possible appointments, noting that such decisions would be announced by the president-elect himself. Grenell himself, who actively supported Trump during the election campaign, has not yet responded to media inquiries. Previously, Grenell was also considered as a candidate for the position of secretary of state, which indicates that Trump has high confidence in him.
