The Parliament of Slovakia enshrined in the constitution the existence of only male and female genders

The Slovak Parliament adopted amendments to the constitution, which define only male and female gender, regulate the issue of adoption and prohibit surrogate motherhood. This is reports the TASR agency.

Deputies of Slovakia supported changes to the constitution aimed at “protecting traditional values”. The amendments establish the existence of only two genders – male and female, and also establish a constitutional guarantee of equal pay for men and women for the same work.

Of the 99 parliamentarians present, 90 voted “for”, 7 – “against”, two abstained. The initiators of the draft law noted that the purpose of the changes is to “strengthen Slovakia’s sovereignty in the sphere of values and cultural and ethical issues”.

The government’s explanatory note states that “strengthening the protection of traditional values is the key to preserving the cultural heritage of the Slovak Republic and ensuring legal stability.” The document also defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The new changes expand the constitutional regulation of social rights, particularly regarding family and parental rights, and were initiated by the governing coalition, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and the Christian Union. From now on, the ban on surrogate motherhood and the child’s right to know his parents are enshrined in the Slovak constitution, with a direct indication that the mother is a woman and the father is a man.
