Due to the offensive of the Russian Federation, the operation of a coking coal mine was stopped in Pokrovsk
Due to the offensive of Russian troops, Ukraine has suspended production of coking coal at a mine in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, which supplies the steel industry. About this informs Reuters.
This is the only mine in Ukraine that produces coking coal needed for the steel industry. According to Ukrkoks, in 2023, about 3.5 million tons of coke were produced in Ukraine, using only coal from Pokrovsk. Producers have considered finding alternative sources if the mine is lost, but the country would still have to import coal, which would increase costs.
“Russia’s invasion led to the destruction of the country’s leading steel mills. Ukraine, previously a major steel producer and exporter, reported a 70.7% drop in production in 2022 to 6.3 million tons. In 2023, it fell to 6 million tons.”, the message says.
It will be recalled that Serhiy Dobryak, the head of the Pokrovsk city military administration, said earlier that the mine is working only for support, and mining has been stopped. About 7,000 residents remain in the city. There has been no water supply since the summer, electricity and gas supply have been cut off. Several shops, Ukrposhta branches and the city hospital are operating to a limited extent.
