E5 leaders to gather in Berlin to discuss war and support for Ukraine
The leaders of Italy, Great Britain, France, Germany and Poland, which are members of the E5 format, will meet in Berlin on June 24. The main topic of the talks will be the Russian-Ukrainian war. This was reported by the Italian government.
The report notes that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni will arrive in Berlin to participate in the meeting on June 24.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation on Monday, will also take part in the negotiations, as he continues to act as head of government.
The E5 format was created in 2024 against the backdrop of increasingly active calls for the rearmament of Europe and increased coordination between countries to support Ukraine in countering the Russian invasion.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously said that such a meeting would take place this week, but did not give a specific date.
It was previously reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized European Council President António Costa’s attempts to establish diplomatic contacts with Russia during an EU leaders’ summit. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal also said that Costa’s attempts to establish contacts with Russia were wrong.
