EU lifts tariffs on a number of US goods after Trump’s threats
The European Union has agreed to a compromise on the implementation of the trade deal with the United States, which US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed on July 27, 2025 in Scotland. This is writes Politico.
Negotiators from the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission reached an agreement after more than five hours of talks. The agreement provides that the EU will eliminate tariffs on US industrial goods and some agricultural products, and Washington will limit tariffs on most European exports to 15%.
The process has been delayed by internal disputes within the EU, as well as by Trump’s actions and statements, including threats regarding Greenland and new tariffs on European cars. An additional factor was the uncertainty following a US court ruling on some of the Trump administration’s tariff powers.
The final text stipulates that the European Commission will be able to suspend the agreement if the US does not reduce tariffs on European steel and aluminium by the end of 2026. Some US tariffs on these products have been as high as 50%.
The agreement is scheduled to be put to a vote during the European Parliament session in Strasbourg in June. Its adoption should be a key step in resolving trade disputes between the EU and the US.
