In Myanmar, the authorities used bombs to disperse the demonstration: 24 people died
In Myanmar, during a Buddhist festival that turned into a protest against the military authorities, an army paraglider dropped two bombs on the crowd. As a result, 24 people died, 47 others were injured. This is reported by the Associated Press.
The attack took place in the town of Chaung U, located in the Sikain region. About a hundred people gathered there who celebrated the national holiday and took part in a rally demanding the release of political prisoners. The crowd began to disperse after reports of an approaching paraglider, but it appeared too quickly and dropped the bombs while people were still standing.
Among the dead are local residents, children, political activists and members of armed groups opposing the army. At the same time, the military denied involvement in the attack. Myanmar’s junta is increasingly using paramotors as it runs short of planes, helicopters and jet fuel.
Let us remind you that the civil war has been going on in the country since 2021. After the coup, the military overthrew the democratically elected government, and former leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to four years in prison. Power passed to the commander-in-chief of the army, General Min Aung Khlain. Against the background of protests against the junta, volunteer units emerged that control part of the territories.
According to the UN, more than three million people have been forced to leave their homes, and almost 20 million are in need of assistance. A general election is scheduled for December 2025, but the junta has banned a number of opposition parties. Voting is likely to take place only in half of the country — in areas controlled by the military authorities.
