EU representatives made a strong statement to protect the Baltic region from Russian threats
EU officials have issued a clear warning to Moscow in response to its aggressive rhetoric towards the Baltic states. The spokesman for the department, Thomas Rainier, commenting on Russia’s threats over the alleged provision of airspace to Ukraine for strikes on Russian territory, stressed the inviolability of the principle of collective security.
Brussels stresses that any attempts at forceful pressure on Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia will be considered as direct aggression against the entire community.
The European Commission confirmed that it is closely monitoring media reports regarding the latest ultimatums from the Russian leadership. Amid growing tensions, European institutions have stepped up work on strengthening the defense capabilities of member states. In particular, this concerns the implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at protecting against modern means of attack and hybrid threats.
“An attack on one of our member states is an attack on the EU as a whole,” European Commission spokesman Thomas Rainier stressed.
Special attention is currently being paid to four flagship security projects. Among them, the creation of the Air Shield system and the implementation of comprehensive solutions for protection against unmanned aerial vehicles are priorities. These steps are aimed at minimizing the risks of external interference and ensuring the inviolability of the airspace of countries bordering Russia.
“The European Commission has seen media reports about threats from Russia to the Baltic states,” the official noted.
In parallel with the official position of Brussels, the heads of the foreign affairs ministries of the Baltic countries issued a consolidated appeal to the international community. The foreign ministers of Lithuania and Latvia stressed the need to urgently strengthen Ukraine’s air defense after the large-scale Easter shelling. In turn, the Estonian side insists on expanding sanctions pressure on Russia as the only effective instrument of deterrence.
The further strategy of the European Union will be based on a combination of diplomatic efforts and the development of its own military infrastructure. Coordination of actions between national governments and central authorities in Brussels remains a key factor in stability in the region. The European community demonstrates readiness for a decisive response to any provocations that may call into question the integrity of the borders of member states.
