Germany temporarily redeploys Patriot and military personnel to Turkey amid tensions with Iran

Germany is temporarily deploying a Patriot anti-aircraft missile system and about 150 troops to Turkey to strengthen NATO’s air defense system on the Alliance’s southeastern flank. reports DW.

The German defense ministry said the operation was to support NATO’s air defense amid the worsening situation in the region related to the conflict over Iran.

According to the German Defense Ministry, the German unit will replace US forces previously deployed in Turkey. Berlin also sees this as a contribution to a fair burden-sharing within the Alliance.

German Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the country is gradually expanding its presence in NATO. He said Germany is already involved in protecting the Alliance’s eastern flank and northern regions, and is now joining in strengthening security in the southeast.

In Turkey, German troops will operate in coordination with Turkish and U.S. forces. The Patriot deployment is expected to strengthen NATO’s defense capabilities in the region.
