Condemnation of Socrates

February 15, 399 BC. there are. the most famous of the Athenian citizens, the philosopher Socrates, was sentenced to death by the democratic court of the motherland of democracy. He was accused of not recognizing the gods that the city revered and introducing new ones, as well as of corrupting the youth. The sentence is death. Disagreement with generally accepted, dubious or even temporary “truths” cost lives.

The main themes of Socratic philosophy were ethics, virtue and the nature of knowledge. He believed that knowledge is a virtue, and ignorance is a source of vice. He attached great importance to self-knowledge, proclaiming the famous phrase: “Know thyself.” However, the main life principle of Socrates was the desire for doubt: “Submit everything to doubt.” It was this principle that led to the tragedy. In his teaching, he argued that a person should not blindly obey the laws, customs and concepts of the state, but be guided by his own mind and his convictions. This proved dangerous for the Athenian democracy, which could not allow the citizen to obey his inner voice more than the Athenian government.

Friends repeatedly offered him escape, but Socrates refused, believing that escape would contradict his teachings and tarnish his name. Truly great people have their great quirks.

The philosopher entered history not only by his life, but also by the way he accepted death. Socrates asked to sacrifice a rooster to Asclepius, the god of medicine, a ritual usually performed as a thank you for healing. Thus, he symbolically perceived his death as liberation from earthly shackles. He believed that the philosopher’s soul did not resist this liberation, so he met death with unmoved calmness. When the time came, he, meditating with his friends on the immortality of the soul, drank a cup of poison and passed away with bright peace.

The trial of Socrates became one of the most famous in the history of philosophy. He became a symbol of a seeker of truth who is ready to sacrifice himself for his beliefs. He left to the world a method of learning the truth through a dialogue between two people, which received his name – the Socratic Method.

In addition, about 60 Ukrainians are still considered missing. These losses left a deep mark on society and influenced the further development of the veteran movement in Ukraine.

The withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan was the result of international pressure and internal changes in the USSR. This step marked the end of a long and exhausting war, the expediency of which for the USSR is still open to doubt.
