This day in the history of Ukraine is marked by the glorious victory of the Cossack army led by Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky over the Moscow army in the Battle of Konotop. This event became a key event in the Muscovite-Ukrainian war of 1658-1659 and a vivid example of military skill and strategic thinking of the Ukrainian command.

Hetman Vyhovskyi, seeking to strengthen the position of Ukraine after the death of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, concluded the Treaty of Hadyatsk with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This angered Moscow, which launched a military invasion.

The Battle of Konotop took place near the city of Konotop (modern Sumy Oblast). Thanks to skillful maneuvering, use of natural obstacles and surprise attacks, the Ukrainian army, supported by the Crimean Tatars and Polish allies, defeated the significantly superior forces of the enemy.
