Fire breaks out at arms factory in Romania: sabotage suspected

In the city of Cujir, in Romania, there was a large-scale fire at a factory specializing in the production of small arms. The authorities suspect sabotage, informs Radio Romania News.

The fire started in one of the hangars intended for the storage of ammunition. According to the police, there were about 400,000 14.5 mm cartridges in the premises, the total value of which is estimated at 5 million euros. Total damages exceed 400,000 euros. The law enforcement officers opened a criminal case under the article “destruction due to negligence”.

Economy Minister Radu Miruce arrived at the scene and did not rule out the possibility of sabotage:

“All possible versions are being studied until we receive the results from the experts of the Institute of Forensics.”

According to the minister, the fire will not affect the fulfillment of already concluded contracts for the supply of products. He also emphasized that no one was injured, since at the time of the incident there were no workers on the territory of the plant – they were on vacation. The burning area was about 700 square meters, the fire was accompanied by explosions, which made it difficult for rescuers to access. The fire was extinguished in about eight hours.

Currently, investigative actions are ongoing: the police are removing recordings from video surveillance cameras on the territory of the enterprise and in the surrounding area, interviewing employees and collecting the necessary documentation. Interrogations and collection of evidence take place under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office of the city of Kujir in order to establish the causes of the explosion and fire. Various versions are considered — from a technical malfunction to targeted sabotage.
