France convenes emergency summit on Ukraine due to US-Russian peace talks without European participation

European leaders will hold an emergency summit in Paris on February 17 as the US and Russia prepare for peace talks without Europe’s involvement. About it on February 15 reported Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski speaking at the Munich Security Conference.

This initiative arose against the background of the recent contacts between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as after the loud statement of US Vice President J. D. Vance, who criticized current European politics and values during a speech on February 14 in Munich.

An additional resonance was caused by the comment of Trump’s special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, who stated on February 15 that Europe will not take a direct part in the negotiations, but its interests will be taken into account.

Sikorsky emphasized that EU leaders are aware of the importance of this issue and hopes that they will take the situation seriously.

It is not yet known who exactly will take part in the summit, but the Prime Minister of Great Britain Keir Starmer and the head of the Polish government Donald Tusk have already confirmed their presence.

France initiated this summit out of concern that Europe could be sidelined from key decisions that will affect the future of Ukraine and the security of the entire region.
