German authorities demand to change the name of the project “NATO Mission in Ukraine”

At the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance in Washington, which will be held on July 9-11, it is planned to announce the creation of the “NATO Mission in Ukraine” (Nato Mission Ukraine). As diplomats told the German News Agency, Berlin’s arguments against the use of this word are not understood by almost all other allies and are perceived as unnecessary attention to Russia.

About this informs Spiegel.

Germany demands that the mission be renamed “PACT” (Pledge Assistance Coordination and Training), which translates as pledging “coordination of assistance and training.” According to Berlin, this better reflects the true goals of the alliance, which wants to coordinate military aid and training of Ukrainian soldiers.

NATO allies do not share Germany’s fears and demand to abandon opposition to the word “mission”. They emphasize that the main goal is to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia, and not to deploy Western military contingents. Summit participants continue discussions on the name and essence of the initiative, seeking to find a compromise that will satisfy all parties and not provoke unnecessary diplomatic complications.

It is also noted that supporters of the use of the term “mission” claim that the Kremlin will somehow condemn the NATO project as aggression and use it for disinformation campaigns.
