German military arrives in Belgium to combat unidentified drones
The German military arrived in Belgium at the request of the country’s government to help protect the airspace from flights of unidentified drones. This was reported by the DPA agency.
The German Ministry of Defense noted that the first units of the Bundeswehr have already arrived in Belgium. They are to assess the situation on the ground and coordinate with their Belgian colleagues the temporary use of means to detect and neutralize drones. The defense ministry added that “the main forces” will arrive in Belgium “in the near future”.
As a reminder, on November 5, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council after a series of incidents with unidentified drones. Belgian intelligence services suspect Russia of these flights. The meeting resulted in a decision to strengthen the National Air Safety Center (NASC) and develop additional measures to combat drones.
On the night of October 29, drones were spotted over the military base in Marche-en-Famenne in the south of the country, for the second time in a few days. They had previously been seen over the Elsenborn base in eastern Belgium.
On November 2, unidentified drones appeared twice again near the Kleine-Brogel air base. The police tried to intercept them, but without success.
On the evening of November 4, drones were spotted over Brussels Airport, causing flights to be temporarily suspended twice. Similar incidents also occurred over Liege Airport and near the Kleine-Brogel, Florence and Schaffen military air bases. On the evening of November 6, Brussels Airport was again suspended due to the appearance of an unidentified drone.
