Germany plans to transfer two additional air defense systems to Ukraine
Germany is preparing to transfer two more IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine, designed to provide protection at short and medium distances — the SLM (medium range) and SLS (short range) models. As informs edition of Rp.pl, delivery should take place by the end of 2024.
The head of the special staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, Major General Christian Freuding, confirmed that the transfer of the systems will take place in the coming weeks.
“The next IRIS-T SLM (medium-range) and SLS (short-range) systems should arrive in Ukraine in the coming days and weeks – before Christmas (December 25)”, he said.
IRIS-T complexes manufactured in Germany are considered one of the most modern anti-aircraft systems in the world. They are designed to engage various aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.
The major general emphasized that Germany’s support for Ukraine will continue not only until the end of 2024, but also after the date of the planned federal elections in Germany, which will be held on February 23, 2025.
In addition to air defense systems, Germany actively supplies Ukraine with other military equipment. According to Freuding, artillery howitzers, Marder infantry fighting vehicles and tanks were recently transferred. A new program to provide strike drones has also been launched.
