In the context of the current conflict, in which children are being held hostage to hostilities, the struggle for their return is becoming particularly acute. Ukrainian children who were illegally deported to Russia suffered serious violations of their rights, including forced relocation, isolation from their families, and adaptation to a completely different cultural environment. The international community, recognising the importance of ensuring children’s rights, has not stood aside: a special International Coalition has been created, bringing together more than 40 countries working together to return children to Ukraine, and Australia has now joined.

Australia is a powerful new ally in the fight for the rights of Ukrainian children

Australia has become the 41st country to join the International Coalition. It is known that the Australian government has long been actively involved in international initiatives to support Ukraine. Australia’s accession to the coalition shows that even distant countries that are not directly affected by the war are ready to support children’s rights.

Commenting on this event, Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said:

“Another country has come to our side in the fight for the rights of Ukrainian children who have suffered from illegal displacement and deportation. We are grateful to Australia for its support and willingness to help bring little Ukrainians back home.”

The International Coalition has united the forces of leading countries, involving human rights organisations, diplomatic missions and international courts to facilitate the legal return of children home. Importantly, this coalition includes countries from different continents – Europe, North America, Asia, and now Australia. This underscores the global scale of the problem, because when it comes to children’s rights, the issue of geographical distance is irrelevant.

How the International Coalition works: legal and diplomatic mechanisms

As part of the Coalition’s work, member countries use several main areas. The first is diplomatic pressure on Russia, calls by the international community for an end to illegal actions and the return of children. The member states support Ukraine in international courts, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), where a number of lawsuits have already been filed regarding violations of children’s rights. The second is the coordination of efforts at the level of organisations such as UNICEF, which provides the documents necessary to identify children, confirm their citizenship, and contact their families. The third aspect is direct assistance to families, including financial, legal and social support for those who have lost contact with their children.

The importance of international support for child return

Australia’s accession was an important milestone, as each new country joining the coalition increases pressure on Russia. Australia, as a democratic country, adheres to the principles of international law, and its support is a recognition that violations of children’s rights are unacceptable for any civilised country.

The process of returning Ukrainian children is accompanied by numerous difficulties, including the unwillingness of the Russian side to cooperate, the lack of clear data on the whereabouts of children, and the cultural adaptation of children who have already become accustomed to Russian conditions. Russia, for its part, is actively impeding the return of children by refusing to provide the necessary information, which creates additional obstacles. However, thanks to the coalition, these issues are being addressed at the international level, which increases the chances of justice.

The involvement of Australia and other countries provides Ukraine with additional resources and support, which, while not solving all the problems at once, strengthens the country’s position. Every child who returns is a victory for the international community, which is making more efforts to ensure children’s rights every day.
