Google accused of possible interference in US elections

Google is accused of possible interference in the US elections, claiming that the search engine provides different results depending on the name of the candidate when asked where to vote. The Washington Post writes about this.

The publication notes that voters are looking for information on the queries ‘Where can I vote for Trump’ and ‘Where can I vote for Harris’. However, Elon Musk and other celebrities claim that the results are different and may be unfair.

According to The Washington Post, a query related to Kamala Harris resulted in a map with the addresses of polling stations nearby, while a query about Trump resulted in only news articles, without an interactive map.

Google explained on the X platform that this difference arises from the existence of Harris County in Texas, whose name coincides with the name of Vice President Kamala Harris. A similar situation is possible for the Republican candidate J.D. Vance, because of the Vance County in North Carolina.

A search for Kamala Harris’s full name did not bring up any results with a link to polling places.

According to The Washington Post, Trump has been accusing Google of bias for several years, and in early 2024, he suggested that the company should be held accountable for interfering in the electoral process.
