Last year, about 5,000 people received Czech citizenship. Most of them (almost half) are Ukrainians. The number of applications from migrants from Ukraine increased after the start of the full-scale war.

Who most often gets Czech citizenship?

In the second city, among those who received a Czech passport last year, there were Slovaks. The third city is currently occupied by former citizens of the Russian Federation. For example, more than a thousand Russians received a Czech passport last year, which is almost twice as many as in 2022.

“As for non-democratic countries, obtaining Czech citizenship is often a protection against some kind of persecution, as well as protection against mobilization or other actions on the part of such states”, – notes the head of the Association of Integration and Migration of the Czech Republic Magda Faltova.

How to get a Czech passport?

Foreigners who have lived in the country legally for 10 years or more can apply for Czech citizenship. Applicants must prove their financial capacity – provide a certificate of income and not receive social benefits for at least three years before submitting an application for citizenship. In addition, those wishing to obtain a Czech passport must pass an exam on knowledge of the Czech language and the country’s system (basic laws, history, culture, traditions, etc.).

On average, 80% of applicants successfully pass the exams each year and receive Czech citizenship.
